the devil’s karaoke*

the song of the devil screams and echoes all through the country and zombies in masks of newborn babies dance and party under a moon the colour of fire. the smell of burning fresh human flesh rotten gas blood and tears like a shroud of thick poisonous clouds hot air burning your lungs and trees die and birds die and all different colours of insects die and earthworms die. the song of the devil screams and echoes all through the country, the country cursed for seven generations by mpu gandring, the country of baratayudha where brothers massacre brothers, a country full of wounds of blood of pus blighted by a plague from the gods, the gods of adam the gods of abraham the gods of moses the gods of ishmael and isaac. the song of the devil screams and screams and echoes and echoes never stopping and zombies of the gods dance and dance and party and party drunk on blood drunk on tears drunk on the sound of drums the sound of burning buildings the sound of broken bones the terrified screams of children who have lost their mothers. waves of hate and anger obliterate cities of salted fish and shrimp paste chilies, drowning and pummeling memories of childhood, neighbours and friends who have turned enemies, degenerates!, nameless enemies and intruders who have disturbed the peace of last night’s dreams. the song of the devil bounces into the air, straight through your eardrums, ripping the cloudless godless unforgiving tropical skies. sharpened machetes, spears and sickles tremble in wait to slash open skin and flesh and muscles of brown and yellow as newly freed ingrate slaves scream “reformasi” without knowing what it means and flatulent cowards and parasites lick the greasy balls of yesterday’s dictator. the song of the devil a karaoke of possessed zombies screams and screams and echoes and echoes never stopping leaving bottles empty of tears tables empty of tears chairs empty of tears stages empty of tears buildings empty of tears and a country empty of tears on a map empty of tears burnt to the ground burnt to the ground burnt to the ground…

Madeleine menungguku*

“Madeleine”. Aku tidak terkejut. Tadi siang aku baru saja menyelesaikan puisi yang kuberi judul Madeleine di Bawah Cahaya Lampu, diilhami lukisan Georges de La Tour. Menulis puisi ini rasanya seperti diinterogasi. Puisi inilah yang membuatku merasa begitu lelah. Perempuan inilah alasannya kenapa aku menulis puisi tadi.

and then

in these woods

is there anything greener

than a woman’s

cambium radiance

a single leaf drifted

to the ground

a bloodless wound

in the tree

dew on the surface

of the leaf

as salty as river sand

the language of life

eternal and immovable

how deep do roots go into the earth

how long can they keep the trunk alive

why is there always a question

of faithfulness

why is there always a noose

not that it matters, but i want to know who did the bad bad georgia brown tattoo on the back of your neck

not that it matters, but the bajaj was painted aubergine purple yesterday

and your skirt got stuck on the oversized exhaust pipe of this city

not that it matters, whatever that means

have you ever tried eating oranges laid out like a sushi plate on a girl’s bottom?

not that it matters where i stole the previous line from

not that it matter, nothing matters

not that the old rally 200 still had the old yellow paint under the primer

not that the colours of everything you own will fade with regular spin cycle and a dash of molto

not that

Scholarships to the Harvard University School of Native Orientalists – Eligibility Requirements

Preference will be given to applicants who serve as sycophants at the Goenawan Mohamad Academy of Other Unfinished Things otherwise known as Komunitas Utan Kayu, Jakarta. Applicants will possess:

  • No degree, but absolute faith in Bernard Lewis
  • Disgust at own country or whatever the antonym is of chauvinism
  • A total lack of understanding of international cultures and a penchant to refer to selves as “the other” or “liyan” when it comes to dissecting own cultures
  • Demonstrated commitment to besmirching the name of Islam at every opportunity (or even if there isn’t one, just go loco)
  • A willingness to be a native informant for geriatric white academics in Ivy League universities upon completion of the Native Orientalists program
  • Rudimentary grasp of the English language (doesn’t matter, it’s cuter that way)

Please return to the Harvard University School of Native Orientalists your application package by the application deadline, or later – doesn’t matter, we know everything about your “jam karet” – that includes:

  • Incomplete application form. Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to know the difference between “scholastic” and “spastic”, or more pertinently (sorry, big word, ya J), between “eligibility” and “intelligibility” . This includes a badly written and overlong, verbose study objective full of purple prose (a la Goenawan Mohamad).
  • Copy of your most recent Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Sore) score report.
  • One letter of reference, either from your Kyai or any of the following: Nirwan Dewanto, Sitok Srengenge, Jantung Lebah Ratu, or, of course, Goenawan Mohamad.
  • Copy of academic transcript (if any, in English translation if you wish, but Arab Gundul is preferred).
  • Copy of identity document (with photos, so we can be absolutely sure that you’re not actually Saut Situmorang).

bacin

i miss those days when i thought i sucked at everything i had no friend.

there seemed to be no way out of that kind of depression.

then i’d go for a walk.

or a ride on my specialized bike (RIP :().

and nothing would change.

i’ll read a book.

the ordeal of gilbert pinfold.

draw the red curtains in my tiny dorm room.

my feet would get cold from the lack of heating (it was winter).

i’ll think of some girl i secretly liked in high school.

jerked off.

wait for the cum to dry on my shorts.

thank you angela carter i don’t feel bad about switching tenses anymore.

maybe i’ll go to sleep.

sleep is the best for depression.

a nice deep sleep.

when all your worries turn into dragons.
